Consuming a Variety of Seafood at the Right Weekly/Monthly Frequencies Can Help Promote Sustainability and Biodiversity
Our previous post discussed “loss of biodiversity” as the unifying metric to gage global progress in sustainable food production. However, this post states that your choice of seafood and frequency of consumption is a powerful personal action that can actively promote sustainability and biodiversity.
Sea Port created the “Go Blue!” seafood sustainability plate to direct how often on a weekly/monthly basis it is appropriate to eat certain seafood items in order to avoid sustainability and health concerns. The “Go Blue!” plate also encourages variety which spreads the pressure over many different species and thus promotes long term food security and biodiversity.
Sea Port believes that no one seafood product should be consumed too frequently. We believe that eating a diverse variety of seafood will better advance the sustainability and biodiversity of all the world’s seafood resources. Our “Go Blue!”weekly/monthly seafood meal planner provides guidance for several of the most popular seafood items. These frequency levels were established based on each items sustainability assessment and from the recognition that certain seafood, such as swordfish can accumulate high levels of methylmercury. The portion size chosen for our guidance is 4oz which matches the recommendation of the United States Department of Agriculture. Please use our “Go Blue!”plate recommendations as you choose to consume a vast variety of seafood to advance sustainability, biodiversity, and your own personal health.
